Girls championship 2024 promises to be an exciting affair, with the usual teams battling for championship glory.  Defending champions Hydel and last year’s second placed finishers Edwin Allen are expected to fight for the top two spots, while St. Jago and Holmwood should battle for the third and fourth positions.

THE TOP FOUR SCHOOLS

Edwin Allen 354 pts

Edwin Allen has a strong, balanced team and should easily win these championships.  Last year, in a nail-biting finish, they lost their crown to Hydel and they know that disqualifications and complacency cannot be allowed to impede their championship quest. Last year, they showed unexpected weaknesses in both the sprint hurdles and in class four, but have now strengthened those areas for this year’s championships.

Edwin Allen is expected to score heavily in classes one and two with their veteran stars leading the way. On the track, Theianna-Lee Terrelonge, Tonyann Beckford, and Kellyann Carr are expected to lead the way in the sprints and hurdles while Rickeisha Simms and Monique Stewart should do the same in the middle-distance events. Jumpers Deijanae Bruce, Rashida Samuels and Throwers Shamoyea Morris, Dionjah Shaw should score heavily in the field events.

Hydel – 311 pts

Defending girl’s champions Hydel intend to put up a strong fight to defend their crown, but it will be an uphill task. As in previous years, they will be the underdogs in this quest for championship glory and will be facing an Edwin Allen team looking to revenge last year’s championship loss.

As expected, Hydel will be strong in the sprints and hurdling events with Alliah Baker, Abigail Campbell, Jody-Ann Daley and Nastassia Fletcher leading the way. But Hydel continues to show weaknesses in the throwing and middle-distance events, and that lack of depth could cost them dearly.

St. Jago -186 pts

St. Jago continues to be the third or fourth placed team that just cannot find the depth to challenge for the girl’s championship title. Their strength lies in the sprinting and hurdling events with Brianna Campbell, Brianna Davidson and Adora Campbell expecting to score valuable points in these events. Jade-Ann Dawkins would have been expected to score valuable points in the horizontal jumps, but there is uncertainty about her current fitness.

Holmwood – 142 pts

Holmwood will not challenge the top three teams, and seem to be in a rebuilding stage. They still continue to be strong in the middle and long distance events, but have major weaknesses in all the other

THE OTHER TEAMS

St. Catherine -Last year, St. Catherine High scored over 100 points and placed 5th at the girl’s championships. They will have to fight tooth and nail to hold off the threats posed by Wolmers, Immaculate and Excelsior in order to maintain that 5th position.

Wolmers – Led by class three sprinter Natrece East, Wolmers intends to be the top corporate area girls’ team at champs. They expect to score the majority of their points in the sprints, hurdles and high jump events.

Immaculate – Immaculate score 94 points last year and now look to score over 100 points this year. Kayla Johnson and Kimberley Wright lead a strong class three team that expects to score the majority of those points.

Excelsior – They under performed last year and placed 8th at these championships.  They were even defeated by corporate schools Wolmers and Immaculate, and they expect to correct this anomaly this year.

Clarendon College – Clarendon expects to make their presence felt in the class III and class four events.   Treshalee- Sutherland is favoured to medal in the class three 400m, while carifta trials winner Jamelia Young will easily win the discus event.

Alphonsus Davis – This school continues to produce middle distance medallists, and carifta games u17 800m champion Alikay Reynolds and central champs 800m g
